Couples Counselling Services Chester
Relationships can be one of the most important parts of our lives, but they can also become places of hurt, distance, confusion or repeated conflict. Couples therapy offers a safe and structured space for both partners to be heard, understood and supported as you begin to explore what is happening between you.
Couples often come to therapy when they feel stuck in the same arguments, when one or both partners feel unheard, or when the relationship has become more about coping than connecting. Therapy can help you slow those patterns down and begin to understand not only what you are arguing about, but what is happening underneath the argument.
My Approach
I’m Steve. My work is grounded in the person-centred approach, which means I aim to offer a warm, empathic and non-judgemental space for both partners. In couples work, the relationship itself also becomes part of the focus.
I may draw on ideas from relationship and family systems theory to help us notice patterns of communication, emotional distance, closeness, conflict and repair. Sometimes couples are not struggling because they do not care, but because the way they try to protect themselves can leave the other person feeling criticised, rejected, controlled or alone.
Therapy can help bring these patterns into awareness, so that you can begin to respond differently rather than repeat the same cycle.
How Couples Therapy Can Help
Understanding The Relationship
Couples therapy is not about deciding who is right or wrong. It is about understanding the relationship as a shared space, where both people bring their own feelings, histories, needs and ways of coping.
In our work together, we may explore:
- Communication difficulties
- Repeated arguments or conflict
- Emotional distance or disconnection
- Loss of trust
- Changes in intimacy
- Affairs or relationship ruptures
- Blended family pressures
- Parenting stress
- Life transitions
- Bereavement, trauma or illness affecting the relationship
- Deciding whether to stay together or separate well
The aim is to create a space where both partners can speak honestly, listen more clearly, and begin to understand the patterns that keep the relationship stuck.
What to Expect
The first session gives us time to understand what has brought you to therapy and what each of you would like to be different. I will work to make sure both partners have space to speak and that the sessions feel balanced and respectful.
Couples therapy can involve difficult conversations, but the aim is not to create blame. The aim is to support honesty, responsibility and understanding.
Some couples come with a clear goal, such as improving communication or rebuilding trust. Others come because they are unsure whether the relationship can continue. Both are valid reasons to seek therapy.
A Safe Space for Both Partners
Couples therapy works best when both people feel they have a voice. My role is not to take sides, but to support the relationship work in a way that is fair, respectful and emotionally safe.
Where there are concerns about coercive control, ongoing abuse, intimidation or fear within the relationship, couples therapy may not be the safest or most appropriate form of support. In those situations, I may discuss alternative options with you.
